Island Hopping in Malta
The Maltese archipelago is made up of three main islands and a handful of smaller ones, each with its own character. Hop between Comino's turquoise lagoons, Gozo's dramatic cliffs, and the tiny islets of St. Paul's Bay. A private boat lets you cover more ground than any ferry schedule allows.
Malta, Gozo, and Comino are the three inhabited islands of the Maltese archipelago, sitting 93 kilometres south of Sicily in the central Mediterranean. The distances between them are short: Comino is just 3.5 kilometres from Malta's northern tip, and Gozo is another 3.5 kilometres beyond that. On a private charter, you can visit all three in a single day.
The Gozo Channel ferry runs a fixed schedule and takes 25 minutes, but it only connects two ports. A private boat lets you approach Gozo from the south, stopping at Mgarr ix-Xini or the sea caves at Xlendi on the way. If you prefer Comino, you can anchor at Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon before the ferries arrive, then continue to the Santa Maria Caves on the island's northern side.
St. Paul's Islands are a pair of small rocky islets in St. Paul's Bay, about 80 metres offshore. According to tradition, the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked here in 60 AD. There is a large statue of the saint visible from the water, and the surrounding area is a good spot for a quick swim in relatively shallow water.
Most island-hopping charters depart from Sliema or Msida, though your skipper can arrange pickup from other points around Malta. A typical route covers 30 to 40 nautical miles over 7 to 8 hours, with four or five stops for swimming, snorkelling, and sightseeing. The skipper adjusts the route on the day based on wind direction and sea state, so you always end up at the most sheltered, comfortable spots.
