Stand Up Paddling in Malta
Malta's calm bays and sheltered coastline make it one of the best places in the Mediterranean for stand up paddling. Glide over crystal-clear water at Mellieha Bay, explore the coast around St. Paul's Bay, or paddle the flat waters of Comino's lagoons. Most mornings, the sea is flat enough for beginners.
Stand up paddling works best on flat, calm water, and Malta delivers that most mornings from May through October. The prevailing northwesterly wind typically picks up after midday, so the sweet spot for SUP is between 7:00 and 11:00 when bays like Mellieha and Armier are often mirror-flat. Water temperature ranges from 20 degrees Celsius in May to 28 degrees in August, warm enough that falling in is part of the fun rather than a problem.
No prior experience is required. SUP boards are wide and stable, and most people can stand up and paddle within the first ten minutes. The key is starting in a sheltered bay with no boat traffic and shallow water. Mellieha Bay is ideal because the sandy bottom extends far from shore, and the water stays knee-deep for a good 30 metres. Armier Bay at Malta's northern tip is another good beginner spot with calm conditions and views across to Comino.
More confident paddlers can explore the coastline, ducking into small coves and sea caves that are too shallow for motorboats. The stretch between Armier and Cirkewwa has several rocky inlets where you can paddle right up to the cliff face. At Blue Lagoon, early morning SUP across the lagoon before the day boats arrive is one of the best experiences on the island.
A private boat charter lets you combine SUP with other activities. Your skipper can take you to a quiet bay, drop anchor, and set you up with boards while the rest of the group swims or snorkels. When you are done paddling, move on to the next stop. Most of our operators carry boards on request, so check with your skipper when booking.
